Kingston General Hospital, a 456 bed facility, has over 800 volunteers working in more than 50 programmes, services and areas of the hospital. These people provide more than 60,000 volunteer hours.  Some of the more visible volunteer placements are at the front desk and cafe but volunteers also work quietly behind the scenes visiting patients, reading to patients or providing educational materials.

The Canadian Cancer Society volunteers raise money for programmes and research, provide education, aid with transportation and support to people with cancer and their families.  Many volunteers have experienced cancer or have been touched by it and they give of themselves and their experience on top of everything else.

Volunteers are essential to the provision of care, they just might be the glue that holds it all together.
